Putting Skills Diagnostic Test — Introduction & Setup Guide

Introduction

The Putting Skills Diagnostic Test is a structured assessment designed to identify a player’s strengths and weaknesses in the three core components of effective putting: start line controldistance control, and green reading accuracy. By combining a consistent setup with clear visual reference points, the test isolates each skill so players and coaches can accurately determine which element of the putting process is limiting performance.
Across 20 controlled putts (10 left-to-right and 10 right-to-left), the player selects a start line, marks it with a coin, and delivers a putt with the intention of finishing at a defined target pace. Each result is recorded using simple shorthand, allowing for immediate analysis and pattern recognition. The outcome is an objective, easy-to-interpret evaluation that helps golfers of all ages and playing levels understand exactly where improvement is needed and how their putting decisions or execution influence the final roll of the ball.

Step-by-Step Test Setup & Execution

  1. Choose the Putt
    1. Select a natural breaking putt between 2-4 m.
Complete 20 putts total: 10 left-to-right and 10 right-to-left ( every single putt has to be from different position )
  1. Mark position of the ball
    1. Place a tee next to the ball where you hit it from.
  1. Set a Pace Target
    1. Put a tee 30–50 cm behind the hole. This marks your intended finish distance for correct pace.
  1. Read the Green
    1. Visualize the entire path your ball should take into the hole.
  1. Place the Coin
    1. Put a coin 1/3 of a put from the hole, on your intended ball trajectory. ( if the ball rolls over the coin it should fall into the hole)
The coin represents the line you chose. Not the AIMING POINT!
  1. Hit the Putt
    1. Your goal is to:
      • Start the ball on your chosen line (roll over the coin)
      • Deliver correct pace (finish around the back tee)
      • Match the break you predicted
  1. Record the Result
    1. Use simple shorthand to track distance, start line, and read accuracy.
  1. Repeat for All 20 Putts
    1. Be consistent with setup and record every putt immediately.
