A lie determines strike quality, distance control, and shot direction.
Before ANY approach shot, the player must evaluate the lie in these categories:

When assessing the lie, a player must check:
  1. Ball position in the grass
  1. Grass type & density (and grain)
  1. Slope under the ball
  1. Stance stability
  1. Nearby obstructions
 
Because the lie affects:
  • Strike Quality: clean or poor contact
  • Distance: shorter, normal, or longer
  • Direction: left/right bias or curve change
