Before ANY approach shot, the player must evaluate the lie in these categories:

When assessing the lie, a player must check:
- Ball position in the grass
- Grass type & density (and grain)
- Slope under the ball
- Stance stability
- Nearby obstructions
Because the lie affects:
- Strike Quality: clean or poor contact
- Distance: shorter, normal, or longer
- Direction: left/right bias or curve change
